Safeway Classic and Les Schwab to Host Unique Pro-Am to Benefit Children’s Course August 30, 2004
The Safeway Classic LPGA tournament has developed a unique new Pro-Am event to be held on Monday, Sept. 13th at The Children’s Course in Gladstone, Oregon. The Les Schwab Par 3 Pro-Am will be held at 3:00 PM and will feature LPGA tour pros and four amateur partners in a fundraising event for the facility. The goal for the event is to raise up to $100,000 for The Children’s Course, through sponsorship dollars and matching grants. All proceeds from the event will go to the course, which provides instruction, equipment and a place to play for youth in the region. “We have worked to support The Children’s Course and other junior golf programs in Oregon since we began the event in 1972,” said Tom Maletis, President of Tournament Golf Foundation, the owners and organizers of the Safeway Classic. “This was a natural extension of that support.” Gary Wanderscheid, Les Schwab Portland district manager feels that the event is a great fit for their company. “We support youth activities throughout the region, from high school sports to little league. The Children’s Course is providing a great service to youth in our area by teaching them not only about golf, but about rules, discipline, and other important life lessons. We are proud to be a part of an event like this that can raise needed funds for the program.” Anyone interested in watching the event is welcome. There is no admission fee. The Children’s Course is located at 19825 River Road in Gladstone. The phone number is 503-722-1530. The Safeway Classic will be held the week of Sept. 13-19 at Columbia Edgewater Country Club. This is the 33rd year for the event in Portland, making it the oldest event on the LPGA tour. To date, the event has raised over $8 million for local children’s charities.
