13 Year-Old Jane Rah Wins Spot in Safeway Classic

The Safeway Classic Amateur Open was created to provide a playing position in the Safeway Classic LPGA tournament in September for the winner. That player is 13 year-old Jane Rah of Torrance, California. Rah shot a 4-over par 76 to beat Kailin Downs of Bend, Oregon by one shot. Downs and third place finisher Mina Harigae of Monterey, California earned exemptions into the Monday qualifier of the Safeway Classic, to be held on September 13.

Players battled unseasonably wet, cold and windy conditions during the one day event, held at Langdon Farms Golf Club. Scores were indicative of the weather and the course, which was set at over 6,400 yards for play. All players in the event had to have a 3.4 handicap or less to be eligible.

Rah will be an eighth grader this school year in Torrance. Her family drove all day on Saturday following a junior event in Southern California to make the qualifier. Rah lost in the 2003 Publinx to Michelle Wie 2 and 1. Her picturesque golf swing was featured in the September 2003 issue of Golf Digest.

According to Tom Maletis, President of Tournament Golf Foundation, the organizers of the Safeway Classic, “Jane will be a great addition to our tournament next month. Along with local professional Allison Hanna, we will have two great exemptions for fans to watch this year.”

The Safeway Classic will be held the week of September 13-19 at Columbia-Edgewater Country Club. This is the 33rd year for the tournament, making it the oldest event on the LPGA tour.
