New Dates, Increased Purse Highlight 2007 Safeway Classic

Tuesday Nov. 14, 2006-Portland OR.

Tom Maletis, President of Tournament Golf Foundation Inc. (TGFI) today announced that the 2007 Safeway Classic presented by Pepsi will be held from Aug. 20-26 at Columbia Edgewater Country Club in Portland.

Maletis also announced that the purse for the 2007 event has been increased to $1.7 million.

The week for the event has been moved back one week to better tie in with the rest of the LPGA schedule in the summer. The new dates should help to increase the strength of the field and allow for players to return from Europe where many are participating in the Evian Masters Weetabix Women's British Open and the Swedish Open and the Evian Masters, starting in late July.

The 2007 Safeway Classic will be broadcast all three days of play on ESPN2. Times for the broadcast will be announced at a later date.

"We are excited about being able to increase our player purse for 2007," said Maletis. "We are also enthused about our new dates, one week later than in the past. This should provide us with a great field, great weather and increased opportunities for fans to enjoy the tournament."

The 2006 Safeway Classic saw record crowds at Columbia Edgewater Country Club. They were treated to a thrilling finish, as LPGA veteran Pat Hurst held off a late challenge from Jeong Jang to notch her fifth career victory.

First held in 1972, The Safeway Classic is one of the oldest event on the LPGA tour and traditionally features one of the strongest fields on the tour each year and 2007 should be no exception. The charitable proceeds from the event are directed from TGFI to the Portland division chapter of the Safeway Foundation for distribution to local area charities.
