Since 1972, the Safeway Classic has seen tremendous growth.

Kathy Whitworth won the inaugural event for a total of $3,750. In 2003, Annika Sorenstam defended her title in Portland and received a first place check for $180,000!

The Safeway Classic is the oldest continuous event on the LPGA tour and the list of champions is like a who's-who of LPGA Hall of Fame members. Kathy Whitworth, Nancy Lopez, Donna Caponi, JoAnne Carner, Amy Alcott, Betsy King, Patty Sheehan and Annika Sorenstam are just a few who have won this prestigious event.

To date the Safeway Classic has raised over $9 million for local children's charities.
